Reason and Emotion

Reason and Emotion is a Walt Disney propaganda video (1943) that is a rich text for a variety of reasons.

For one, it reveals a sample of the kind of propaganda being produced to encourage people to support WW2. Hitler is presented in a range of clever graphic representations, none subtle but all effective.

In addition, it provides great examples of gender stereotyping, again using graphics to represent the civilized and uncivilized male and an emotional woman who is a binge eater.

Great discussion opportunities in terms of how these representations might be (un)acceptable in our enlightened times.

(These ideas are adaptable to an Intermediate or Secondary classroom – ed.)
