Dear Colleague:
We encourage you to join the Association for Media Literacy (AML) today! By doing so, you gain access to a range of resources and a community of people who are as interested and involved in media education and literacy as you are. Plus, you help the AML carry on the exemplary work for which it has earned local, national and international recognition, acclaim and respect.
In Ontario, one of the long term strategies of the AML is to work with educational institutions such as York University and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) to develop opportunities for those preparing to enter the teaching profession to learn about media literacy. Collaboration between the Centre for Media and Culture in Education (CMCE), the National Film Board (NFB) and the AML resulted in the recent publication of an issue of ORBIT Magazine solely dedicated to media education. The AML also offers a variety of professional development events, activities and teaching materials to support practising educators who wish to broaden and hone their media skills. Among them are Sharefest, an annual event where teachers come together to share with colleagues what they are doing in the classroom and to discuss issues and concerns; curriculum workshops; educator and industry specialist panel discussions; and lessons plans that are distributed to members as well as posted on the AML web site.
Access to the AML web site is included in the price of annual membership (CDN $30). We have recently upgraded our web site to make it more accessible and useful for our members. There you will find, in addition to lesson plans, articles and reviews, various postings for news and upcoming events, links to other significant media sites, and other valuable information. This year, we are encouraging our members to become more actively and directly involved in the AML. To that end, we invite you to submit articles, posting or lesson plans for the site, care of Carol Arcus at carcus@rogers.com. Our new web site will allow for a more dynamic and accessible exchange of ideas, resources and lessons and we'd like you to play an active part.
This project underlines one of the AML's central goals -- to respond even more effectively to its members’ needs, and to reflect even more widely their experiences through the web site and other initiatives.
Whether you are an educator, parent, media practitioner or student, the AML has something to offer you. New courses and curriculum, an ever-increasing media presence in everyday life, and a rapidly changing media landscape make membership in the AML essential.
