Speakers

Members of the AML Executive are in demand to speak at local, national and international events.   Educators in Canada and around the world recognize the importance of media education and professional development opportunities.  The speakers listed here have delivered hundreds of talks to teachers, parents and students and groups representing both the public and private sector.

AML speakers address such issues as:

  • The impact of our consumer culture on identity, attitudes and behaviours
  • Corporate sponsorship in education, where partnerships between school boards and companies extend commercialism to students
  • New and converging technologies that blur the traditional distinctions between television, movies, recorded music and the Internet
  • Issues of representation in the media, including gender, race and violence
  • American media products and Canadian cultural identity
  • Concentration of ownership: more choices fewer voices
British educator Len Masterman offers the following reasons for prioritizing media education today:
  1. There is a high rate of media consumption and a saturation of contemporary societies by the media.
  2. The media convey ideological and value messages and wield a great deal of influence as consciousness industries.
  3. We are witnessing a growth in the management and manufacture of information, and its dissemination by the media.
  4. The media have increasingly penetrated our central democratic processes.
  5. Communication and information is increasingly influenced by a visual imperative.
  6. It is important to educate students to meet the demands of the future.
